Saint Joseph's College was founded by the Portland Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in 1912 and was governed by the Maine Legislature. It’s the Roman Catholic college of Maine. The College has a religious Board of Overseers and religious Board of Trustees. Saint Joseph's became a coeducational institution in 1970. College began to provide distance education programs in 1976. The Division of Graduate and Professional Studies is now offering distance programs not only nationally but also internationally.

Online education, offered through the Division of Graduate & Professional Studies consists of master's degrees, bachelor's degrees, associate's degrees, certificate programs, continuing education courses. Saint Joseph's College offers more than 30 academic programs leading to online bachelor's and online master's degrees, as well as associate degrees and certificate programs. Distance education programs are delivered online and through independent study, providing the access and flexibility that working professionals require. Financial Aid
More than 90 percent of full-time students receives aid. Financial Aid funds consist of college scholarships and grants, state funds, federal Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Perkins Loan, Stafford Loans, Federal Work Study and Nursing Student Loans. Applying for financial aid is an individualized process requiring evaluation and consultation.
