The University of Texas at El Pasohas been an important part of the El Paso community since it was founded as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy.
It was founded as The Texas State School of Miners and Metallurgy. Then it was called Texas Western College and it became the first college in a Southern state to integrate its intercollegiate athletic crew. It has evolved into a major public research establishment. It is the second oldest academic component of the University of Texas system. UTEP's six colleges offer undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The University of Texas at El Paso is accredited through the doctoral level by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges, and various specialized programs are accredited by the appropriate agencies in the component universities. Since more than 60 percent of UTEP's students receive financial aid, the staff of the Office of Student Financial Aid is aware how important a grant, loan or workstudy can be in helping student to achieve educational purpose.
