UTEP students live and study in the world's largest binational metropolitan area, pursuing cultural, social, and academic opportunities not available on most university campuses. The University of Texas at El Pasohas been an important part of the El Paso community since it was founded as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy.

It was founded as The Texas State School of Miners and Metallurgy. Then it was called Texas Western College and it became the first college in a Southern state to integrate its intercollegiate athletic crew. It has evolved into a major public research establishment. It is the second oldest academic component of the University of Texas system. UTEP's six colleges offer undergraduate and graduate degrees. 

The University of Texas at El Paso is accredited through the doctoral level by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges, and various specialized programs are accredited by the appropriate agencies in the component universities. Since more than 60 percent of UTEP's students receive financial aid, the staff of the Office of Student Financial Aid is aware how important a grant, loan or workstudy can be in helping student to achieve educational purpose.

The focus of the university is to assist in the realization of our students’ goal of a higher education system. Through various financial aid programs, education and advising university strives to provide the financial resources necessary for students to be successful. University compliance with all federal, state and institutional statutes and policies affecting the administration of student aid programs. 

Student Life
Student life at UTEP is as dynamic and diverse as student body. Through more than 170 organizations ranging from academic/professional to social and service groups, every student will find a way to get involved. Students who are involved in campus activities do better academically. Each student can also find programs and offices that focus on helping he or she make the transition to college life, pay for school, study and enhance university experience.
