Bluefield State College was founded as a black teachers college in 1895. Bluefield State College provides students an affordable, accessible opportunity for public higher education. This historically black institution prepares students for a variety professions, graduate study, informed citizenship, community involvement, and public service in an ever-changing global society.
The College displays its commitment to the student’s intellectual, personal, ethical, and cultural improvement by providing a dedicated faculty and staff, quality educational programs, and strong student support services in a nurturing environment.
The College has emerged as a four-year state supported commuter college serving south-eastern West Virginia with a primary thrust in the direction of career and technical two and four year programs. The liberal arts programs of the College are dedicated to enhancing its unique mission.
The College awards baccalaureate and associate degrees. Instructional programs are offered in a wide range of career fields including engineering technologies, teacher education, business, arts and sciences, nursing and health science professions. Students may also complete the non-traditional Regents Bachelor of Arts degree through Bluefield State College.
The College cooperates closely with area two-year colleges in developing two-plus-two degree opportunities for selected baccalaureate level programs whereby the two years completed for an associate degree are applicable toward the baccalaureate degree. Bluefield State College offers a wide variety of courses off campus and through distance.
AccreditationBluefield State College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association.
AdmissionsAdmission requirements include the following: 1) application for admission; 2) official high school transcript or GED scores (sent by high school or Department of Education) and ACT or SAT Scores; 3) At least a 2.0 high school GPA and an 18 ACT composite or 870 SAT composite (SAT combined Critical Reading and Math scores); or 4) At least a 3.0 high school GPA and SAT or ACT scores regardless of score; 5) college transcript (if college credit was earned during high school); 6) immunization record of MMR (if born after January 1, 1957).
Financial AidStudent financial aid is available from federal, state and institutional sources. Application forms for federal programs may be obtained from the College Financial Aid Office or from high school guidance counselors.
